Roberto Ottaviano, soprano sax; Marco Colonna, clarinets; Alexander Hawkins, piano; Giovanni Maier, bass; Zeno De Rossi, drums

A veteran of Italian jazz, Roberto Ottaviano has been recording albums constantly and consistently since 1983. Crucially influenced by one of the seminal soprano jazz saxists, Steve Lacy, Ottaviano followed in his footsteps and specialised in this instrument. His project Eternal Love is an homage to Africa, more specifically, Afrocentric musical expressions. In addition to Ottaviano’s original compositions, the quintet also play music by luminaries the likes of Don Cherry, Abdullah Ibrahim, Charlie Haden and John Coltrane, and regularly venture into the realms of intense improvisation.

Theon Cross, tuba; Chelsea Carmichael, saxophone; Nikolas Ziakras, guitar; Patrick Boyle, drums

Theon Cross plays in a variety of combos and ensembles (among others, his collaborators have included Little Simz, Stormzy, Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia...), but his visibility as London’s leading tubist today must be credited to his core presence in the hugely popular Sons Of Kemet. A highly versatile tubist, Cross is not only capable of attuning himself to different cross pollinations, but also pushes the boundaries of his technique, switching smoothly between heavy bass-lines, driving rhythms and melodic phrasing (even soloing!).
His latest album, Intra-I, is a veritable patchwork of sound. Patterns of dub, jazz, hip-hop, soca, grime... “and other sounds connected to the Afro-Caribbean diaspora” alternate vibrantly and dynamically against a background of programmed beats. Intra-I is an explicit, declarative compendium of Black music, a reflection, a loose reinterpretation of London’s hard-hitting club beats, but with a deliberate nod to Caribbean traditions, most notably the heritage of Jamaica and its sound systems.

Due to the cancellation of his European tour Ben LaMar Gay will not perform at the 64th Ljubljana Jazz Festival.
