Za imenom MinAfric Orchestra se skriva številčna, večinoma italijanska druščina, ki sta jo leta 2007 zbrala oče in sin Minafra – trobentač Pino in pianist Livio, ki smo ju že spoznali na naših odrih. Livio je nastopil na Drugi godbi, Pino prav tako (s projektom Pino Minafra Sud Ensemble), ob tem pa tudi na našem festivalu kot član izvrstnega Italian Instabile Orchestra. MinAfric Orchestra se navdihuje v godbi, nastali kot posledica pregnanstva južnoafriških glasbenikov sredi 60. let prejšnjega stoletja v Veliko Britanijo. Med glasbeniki, ki so zapustili domovino, je bil tudi bobnar Louis Moholo, član vplivne zasedbe The Blue Notes, ki je leta 1964 kar skupinsko zapustila JAR; Moholo je danes njen edini še živeči član, sicer pa je tudi ustanovitelj zasedbe Viva La Black, ki je dala ime omenjenemu projektu.
Poleg Mohola bosta v ekstatičnem slavju združevanja evropskega in južnoafriškega svobodnjaškega jazza (prežetega s tradicionalno zvrstjo kwela) sodelovala tudi pianist in pevka Keith in Julie Tippett, ki imata za seboj pestro zgodovino. Julie Tippetts je bila v 60. letih, takrat kot Julie Driscoll, uspešna na folkrockovski sceni; pela je pri Brian Auger & The Trinity ter posnela kar nekaj uspešnic (med njimi predelavo Dylanove pesmi This Wheel's on Fire). Še preden je spoznala sedanjega moža (in prevzela njegov izvirni priimek Tippetts), se je preusmerila v avantgardno vokaliziranje in je poleg njegovih projektov sodelovala z vrsto vidnih eksperimentatorjev. Keith Tippett je bil pomemben protagonist artrockovske scene (sodeloval je s King Crimson), obenem pa je vodil vrsto avantgardnih projektov (Mujician). Projekt, ki ga bomo spoznali, prinaša nove predelave Tippettovih skladb in skladbe južnoafriških glasbenikov, kot so Dudu Pukwana, Chris McGregor in Mongezi Feza (vsi so bili člani The Blue Notes). Učna ura, torej, iz »bratstva vdiha« ali Brotherhood of Breath, kakor se je imenovala najbolj znana zasedba južnoafriških in britanskih glasbenikov. Tokrat s sredozemskim nadihom!

Incorporating mostly Italian artists, the MinAfric Orchestra was in 2007 formed by father and son Minafra, trumpeter Pino and pianist Livio, who have already appeared before Slovenian audiences. Pino played at the Ljubljana Jazz Festival with the formidable Italian Instabile Orchestra and they were both guests of the Druga godba Festival, where Pino performed with his Pino Minafra Sud Ensemble. The MinAfric Orchestra feeds on the various styles of music brought over by the South African musicians forming part of the mid 1960s exiled jazz community in Great Britain. Among the expatriate musicians was also drummer Louis Moholo, participant in the influential The Blue Notes, members of which in 1964 collectively left South African Republic. Today its only living member, Moholo is also the creator of the Viva La Black ensemble, whose name has inspired the current project.
Aside from Moholo, part of this ecstatic celebration of the symbiosis between European and South African free music (permeated by kwela, the traditional SA street music), will also be pianist Keith and singer Julie Tippett, who boast impressive CVs. In 1960s, still under her maiden name Driscoll, Julie Tippetts made a distinguished career in folk-rock; she sang with Brian Auger & The Trinity and quite a few of her songs were highly popular (e.g. her version of Bob Dylan’s This Wheel's on Fire). Already before meeting her spouse-to-be (she has preserved the original spelling of his surname, Tippetts), she switched to experimental vocal music and apart from contributing to her husband’s projects worked with a number of notable experimenters. An influential figure on the art rock scene (he collaborated with King Crimson), Keith Tippett also led a series of avant-garde projects (e.g. ensemble Mujician). The current project revolves around new arrangements of Tippett’s compositions, as well as works by South African musicians, such as Dudu Pukwana, Chris McGregor and Mongezi Feza (all members of The Blue Notes). A lesson in the Brotherhood of Breath; a concept framed by the eponymous, widely renowned South Africa-meets-GB big band. This time seasoned with a Mediterranean flavour!
