Richard Bona, bas / bass
Clarence Penn, bobni / drums

Whilst accordion played a prominent role during the trailblazing days of jazz (Accordion Joe, Art Van Damme), it nevertheless had to be reinstated in the modern history of jazz. Richard Galliano is incontestably one of those European accordionists who are most deserving for destigmatizing the instrument and reintroducing it into contemporary – jazz and neoclassical – music contexts. “Richard Galliano changed the history of the accordion: today we can speak of "before" and "after" Galliano,” explained Japanese accordionist Yasuhiro Kobayashi, among others also Björk’s accompanist. In Slovenia, Galliano appeared in various projects (e.g. in a duo with Michel Portal), each shedding light on his versatility and propensity for merging various genres; from French musette and chansons to Astor Piazzolla’s tango and classical music as well as adaptations of traditional idioms, naturally always with a subtle jazz undertone.
Galliano, whose albums won a number of prestigious awards (e.g. Django d' Or, Victoires de la Musique, Boris Vian Award) and who has performed with sundry jazz, classical or tango musicians (he closely befriended Piazzolla), is coming to Slovenia laurelled with the success of his superb new recording, Love Day. As suggested by its title, the album is pervaded by express lyricism, romantic sentiments and sophisticated melodies, with the artists significantly reciprocating various motifs. Aside from Gonzalo Rubalcaba, the preeminent Cuban pianist of the younger generation, who is also to perform in Ljubljana, the album features another two distinguished musicians; percussionist Mino Cinelu and double bass player Charlie Haden. For the Festival, Cinelu will be replaced by drummer Clarence Penn, who has extensively collaborated with numerous illustrious artists, including Betty Carter, Stanley Clarke, Dianne Reeves and Mike Stern. Double bass will be played by Cameroonian (currently a New Yorker) Richard Bona, a highly sought-after musician, whose adroitness has among others been noticed by Larry Coryell, Michael and Randy Brecker as well as Pat Metheny.
