Probably none of the contemporary jazzmen has performed in Slovenia (Ljubljana, Jazz Cerkno, Izzven in Maribor) more often than Ken Vandermark, one of the most compelling American musicians of his generation (b. 1964).  Ever since his first Slovenian concerts with The Vandermark 5 (MKNŽ Club in Ilirska Bistrica and Druga godba Festival Ljubljana) in 2000, the reedist has almost every time appeared in another outfit, be it as a bandleader or a guest musician. This Chicagoan, but native of Boston, has been involved in multifarious line-ups adopting various genres and methods, among others the Territory Band, DKV Trio, Free Music Ensemble, Sonore, School Days, Spaceways Inc., Free Fall and The Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentett. He has repeatedly shared the stage with some of the above bands, but in honour of the Ljubljana Festival’s golden jubilee he shall introduce a new group to Slovenian audiences!
Bearing an expressive name, Powerhouse Sound is Vandermark’s project that explores new sonic dimensions which emerge when jazz saxophone is in juxtaposition with striking but also more experimental rock. Further incentive for the establishment of the band was the idea of two line-ups; an American and a Norwegian one, which would play the same compositions. Self-evidently, the dual band released a double album Oslo/Chicago: (((Breaks))), yielding entertaining as well as dance music which is nonetheless characterised by great complexity, unconventional sounds and rhythmic loops. Here, Vandermark was joined by bass players Nate McBride and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, guitar player Jeff Parker, drummers Paal Nilssen-Love and John Herndon, as well as Lasse Marhaug, electronics and noise artist. In Ljubljana, the Chicago line-up will perform: Nate McBride as well as Jeff Parker and John Herndon, members of the influential Chicago post-rock group Tortoise. On this occasion, Vandermark has dedicated his progressive, salient and rhythmical, as well as psychedelic creations to The Stooges, King Tubby, Burning Spear, Miles Davis and Bernie Worrell, to name but a few. The congruous and forceful band draws from reggae and dub, funk and acid jazz as well as post-rock, which is underpinned by distorted guitar tunes and electronic noise.
