– nas z načeli in citati nagovarjajo Morricone, free jazz, eksotika, noise, Godard, klezmer, Ornette, Spillane, avantgarda, Carl Stalling, hardcore, klasika, japonska glasba, radikalna judovska kultura … in kajpak John Zorn!

In an interview, which he normally very reluctantly grants, for Mladina magazine (conducted by Ičo Vidmar, Miha Zadnikar and Luka Zagoričnik) before performing with Electric Masada in Ljubljana in 2004, John Zorn explained: “In my view none of the records I’ve made defines my work. I am not quite that certain myself, what John Zorn is all about.” Well, this makes it easier for us, as his oeuvre involves perhaps some of the most diversified material anyone has ever made. In his work, Zorn resorts to a myriad of artistic methods, offering references to painters, filmmakers, writers, other cultures… However, these allusions are throughout made in unusual sequences, which are dictated by game theory, incidence, or impromptu composing. As elucidated by the man himself, every single facet of his music makes sense to him and they are all interconnected. The hundreds of albums he has sired as a composer, publisher and producer (he manages the cult recording label Tzadik) – his Filmworks series alone has witnessed its 23rd title! – reveal traces and principles of Morricone, free jazz, exotica, noise, Godard, klezmer, Ornette, Spillane, avant-garde, Carl Stalling, hardcore, classical music, Japanese music, radical Jewish culture… and, naturally, John Zorn himself!
