Brazilian musician Hamilton de Holanda has won general acclaim through his innovation of the traditional bandolim (Brazilian mandolin, commonly played in music style known as choro), which he transposed into a new sound and music context, thereby asserting himself as one of the most idiosyncratic contemporary (not only jazz) musicians. He was initiated into the world of music at the age of five, at the time still playing the traditional 8-stringed bandolim. To his instrument, de Holanda subsequently introduced two new strings, thereby formulating a redefinition of the instrument, as his technique – liberating bandolim from its traditional legacy and fusing choro and other Brazilian idioms, including jazz, rock etc. – added a universal dimension to the emblematic Brazilian instrument. For his virtuosity, as well as for his not quite that common instrument, he is compared with the celebrated banjo player Béla Fleck.
Released in 2006, his album Brasilianos (made with the quintet which is also to guest in Ljubljana) received a Latin Grammy Award nomination for best instrumental album; it features de Holanda’s original music, and also includes some arrangements of works by Heitor Villa-Lobos and Gilberto Gil. Last year the quintet released a sequel to the successful album, Brasilianos 2. De Holanda has made several other recordings; solo, as well as in duos and trios or various extended formations. In 2005 he appeared at Midem, where he performed the launching concert of the Year of Brazil. His solo album 1 byte 10 strings enthralled the French critics, who named him a “Bandolim Prince”. He contributed to the recordings by famous Brazilian and other musicians, such as Yamandu Costa, Djavan, Cesaria Évora, Beth Carvalho, Ivan Lins and João Bosco. Members of his quintet have also worked with world-reputed Brazilian artists: Chico Buarque, Djavan, Guinga, Lenine, Milton Nascimento, Maria Bethânia, Simone, Rosa Passos, Hermeto Pascoal etc.
